Peter James Goodbody was born in 1964 and attend Birkenhead School and then Manchester University from which he graduated Batchelor of Laws in 1986. He was elected to the Northern circuit on 16 December 1986, being proposed by Eric Somerset Jones QC (a distinguished former Attorney General of the Circuit) and Ian Trigger (later a Liverpool Circuit Judge). He joined Oriel Chambers in 1986. While his practice encompassed most general civil work, including personal injury and employment, he also developed a commercial practice in asset finance and factoring, and appeared in the Business and Property Courts regularly. His understated and unassuming manner belied a keen mind. His heart lay perhaps mostly in his substantial interests outside work: the arts, particularly painting, live music and photography, of which he was an accomplished practitioner. He was of great help to the Liverpool Business and Property Forum in creating this very website, which he characteristically and generously insisted on doing for no recompense. HHJ Cadwallader, the Business and Property Courts specialist Circuit Judge in Liverpool, with whom he was a near contemporary, remembers him as a fair opponent, and a kindly and pleasant man, whom it was always a pleasure to meet. His friends remember him as very thoughtful and caring man, always willing to help others, and a good listener. Sadly, he died suddenly, and tragically early, on 22 March 2023. He will be much missed.
